Four miles around campus with both Joshua and Nathan in the stroller.  I was a little stiff yesterday, but I'm feeling good today.  It wasn't anything serious, just a transition to more consistent running rather than just walking or (very) easy jogging.  But here we go for a faster St. George in October.  I'm confident I can break 3 hours and would like to get closer to 2:50.  With more consistent training in the coming years, I'd like to get down around 2:40 (at least).  Although I think I could probably go faster, the necessary training might not let me maintain the balance I want with family, school, etc.

I went 2.5 miles with the stroller and 2.5 without.  Without the stroller, I did alternating harder and easy stretches of 1/3 a mile.  It felt good.  I obviously have a long way to go, but things are going well so far.  Also, we did get into St. George, so now I have a clear goal to be shooting for.

I had a good run to a park in Logan (visiting my in-laws), ran there for a couple of miles, then ran back.  The last mile I did alternating 30 second intervals of hard and easy.  Sort of stride pace.  Felt quite good to go faster.  We'll be at Yellowstone/Jackson hole for a bit, so it should be some pretty scenery to run in the next few days (as well as altitude).

Back in Riverside and I had a really good run this morning.  Getting over 6 is a good start to the week.  I went close to 5 around and through campus and then 1.5 in the fivefingers around family housing.  I also did 2 sets of core exercises and 3 x 20 pushups.

After a 1.5 mile warmup, I did 3 x 1 mile repeats in 6:22, 6:26, 6:34.  After each mile, I did about 2/3 mile recovery and then finished with another mile or so in the fivefingers to cool down.  This was a good first speed workout.  I have quite a bit of speed to regain (and then improve on), but it takes a few sessions and continued decent mileage to get that going again.  Today was a good start.

It was a good Monday run.  Part of my run was to run some errands--literally.  I got a couple inner tubes for our jogging stroller and some slime.  I'm hoping to bump up my miles just a bit this week, probably to 44-45 or so, and then keep building for the marathon.  I'd like to keep my miles a bit higher over the next year, probably keeping in mind a marathon next year.  Maybe Boston or St. George or Top of Utah, with a goal to drop my time down below 2:45 or so.  

 I think I could be pleasantly surprised with consistent miles, but I'd like to at least get around there for the next year.

I did 3 x 1 mile repeats with 2/3 mile recovery.  The splits were 6:26, 6:22, and 6:20.  After the third recovery jog, I did 1/3 a mile in 1:14 (5:42 pace).  My speed has a long way to go, but this is a step up from last week and I'm happy with it considering I'm also building mileage right now.  I felt much better today than I did a week ago, and my repeats were significantly faster.

My long run was broken up due to some family activities.  I ran 14.5 in the morning, about nine with the boys in the stroller.  Then went 3 more in the evening just to bump up the total mileage.  I actually feel really good and am happy with how I've been feeling as I've increased mileage.  I don't have nearly as many little aches as I've had in the past, and I'm hoping that my work on form and just running smarter in general is contributing to this.  If so, then I'm confident that I'll be able to have some solid mileage and eventually get some pretty solid marathons in the coming years!

I did 1.5 warmup then 3 1-mile repeats in 6:24, 6:20, and 6:17 with 1/2 a mile recovery between.  I did a 2.5 mile cooldown after.  Since I had a shorter recovery time in between repeats and still went about 3 seconds faster per mile than last week (and I've been building miles), I'm pretty happy with the workout.  I'd like to get these down under 6 consistently, but I think that will come as I keep doing some type of speedwork and, more importantly, keep increasing miles and maintaining a good aerobic base.

Hey, I am running a 10k in your neck of the woods on October 10th. It is the Citrus Herritage 10k. I am getting a race in at close to sea level vacationing in Disneyland. The race starts and end at the Galleria at Tyler.

That sounds great, Chad! A trip to Disneyland and a 10K race on top of it. It was pretty hot here for a bit, but it's cooled off a bit. It should be quite nice by October 10th. Good luck prepping for the race and feel free to ask any questions as you prep for the race about the area/etc.

I went 9 miles with the boys in the stroller.  I found a backroad that goes to Andulka park, but that has a lot less traffic than some of the other streets, and it has been great.  I'm feeling good about training.  Whether it pays off this year, I'm not sure.  But I think we're laying a good foundation for future races.

This ended up being a little longer than I had planned.  We were in San Diego for the weekend and I had a great run around Mission Bay, with a few miles down around 6:10 pace.  But since I hadn't run there before, I wasn't quite sure when I should turn around and run back to my sister's house.  So I ended up going a bit longer than is probably ideal a week before the marathon.

4 miles with the boys in the stroller.  I threw in fairly regular strides just to get comfortable going a bit faster and to get my legs used to it.  Over the weekend, my hunch that I went too hard on Saturday was confirmed, since I felt like I was recovering from a half-marathon (for which my time would have been right around 1:30, maybe a bit faster).  But I'm feeling better now.

St. George Marathon.  I was on pace to break 3:00 or be very close to it, until I had a sharp pain in my left knee around mile 17 or 18 (I haven't looked that carefully at my watch yet).  I backed off, but every time I tried to run it would hurt again.  I walked pretty much the rest of the way.  A pretty miserable race (so miserable that I'm not telling my time or logging it as a race).  But I did have a really good 17 miles or so and now just need to do a better job of maintaining an aerobic base so I can be better prepared for races next year.

Sorry to hear about your marathon. Hopefully you can avoid it next time. My 10k in Riverside is coming up this Sunday. It has an 8:00 a.m. start, so I hope it isn't to hot. The course is an out-and-back with an average of a 1.5% slope (all on roads). The first 2.25 miles should have the most work, the rest should be pretty easy. I plan on checking it out on Friday on our way to San Diego.

5 miles really easy with Anna and the boys in the stroller. My knee didn't bother me at all, though my muscles were quite sore.  So now I'm just going to try to do a better job of getting consistently higher miles so that I can have better and more consistent races.  I'd like to run under 3:00 in the next year, and hopefully under 2:50.  For now, though, the goal is just to get a decent base under me and to avoid longer periods with little to no training.

There are benefits to the quarter system, and finishing earlier is one of them. There are also significant drawbacks. I haven't been back to Maryland/Virginia for a couple years, but we'll be heading back for a bit next summer and I'm really looking forward to it. It's a beautiful area. 4 miles again around campus.  We've been going up to the botanic gardens to see the turtle that sometimes is there.  We haven't seen the turtle, but there are a lot of fish.  It's been nice to work on some of my own projects and to spend some time doing other things--baking bread, running, help more around the house--after a pretty intense finish to this quarter.   I can't complain, though.
